Oliver and the Whispers of the Deep City

Oliver was a boy who looked at the ground more than the sky because he loved the secrets hidden in the dirt. While other children played tag, Oliver hunted for fossils, old keys, and bits of history that the earth had swallowed. One sunny afternoon while digging for old coins in his backyard, his shovel hit something that did not sound like a rock. It was a sharp, ringing sound that vibrated through his arms and made the nearby birdbath shiver. He knelt down, his heart racing as he brushed away the damp soil with his bare hands.
